Aidan "Tators" Zaugg is a charismatic 6 year old little boy residing in Richland Washington USA. On Friday April 14th 2006, as a 4 year old, Aidan's life was changed forever when he was diagnosed with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. This is an exceedingly rare form of terminal brain cancer that mostly affects the very young. Currently there are limited treatment options available, and unfortunately, the cancers statistics are beyond horrifying.

·      There are only about 200 cases diagnosed each year.

·      Due to the diffuse nature of the cancer there are no surgical options, and current chemotherapies have been found to be ineffective.

·      With treatment, the median survival rate is less than 12 months.

·      The chance of continued survival beyond 1 year is less than 8%.

While these statistics are unusually dire, Aidan's family believes these are the cancer's statistics and not Aidan's. They know that miracles happen everyday, so they are asking..."Why Not Aidan?" With the spiritual, medical, and financial support of many, they believe they will see Aidan learning at our schools, playing baseball in our parks, and becoming an active member of the Tri-Cities community where five generations of his family have thrived.

Aidan has completed his radiation therapy at the University of Washington Hospital in Seattle Washington. Under the supervision of Dr. Russell Geyer, Aidan's continuing care and chemotherapy is being administered by the exceptional doctors & staff at Seattle's Childrens Hospital. Aidan is currently enrolled in a Phase II Clinical Trial (PBTC-007) which is testing the effectiveness of the cancer inhibiting drug ZD1839 (Iressa™) in conjunction with standard radiation therapy. ZD1839 is an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor. In theory, if EGFR's are over-expressed and contributing to cancer cell duplication, ZD1839 will block the receptor and thus inhibit duplication of the cancerous cells. It is the hope of the doctors, researchers, Aidan's family, and his many supporters, that this drug in combination with his completed radiation therapy will be the miracle that finally gets control of this horrifying disease.

With the understanding that radiation normally causes swelling of the brain stem, and this swelling increases the symptoms the patient is experiencing, in most cases the doctors will wait 30 to 45 days to complete a post therapy MRI to allow time for the radiation swelling to recede. In Aidan's case his symptoms were so much improved, the doctors decided to perform the post radiation MRI only 5 days post therapy. The doctors, Aidan, his family, and his many supporters were not disappointed. The post radiation MRI showed a 60% reduction in the size of the tumor. Aidan has now received 9 additional MRI's, and all 9 have shown the tumor as being remarkably stable and unchanged.

These MRI results, and the fact that today Aidan remains totally symptom free, are just a couple of small miracles in a continuing series of miracles that Aidan has received. These miracles are a result of the fine care he is receiving, and a direct result of the prayers from his growing number of supporters. Aidan's family is grateful beyond description for his care, appreciative for the unbelievable amount of support, and thankful for the tremendous number of prayers. The road ahead is still long... but with the continuing support and prayers of many, we believe Aidan will receive his final miracle and he will be cured.
